European Greenfinch Hatchling
Chloris chloris (hatchling)
A newly hatched European Greenfinch is blind, mostly naked, and confined to a cup nest hidden in a hedge, shrub, or small tree. It cannot forage or fly, relying on repeated begging calls and gaping to receive food from its parents. Its diet at this stage is soft, regurgitated seed material with some small invertebrate matter. The bright gape flanges around the mouth help guide feeding adults in the dim shelter of the nest.
