Okapi Calf
Okapia johnstoni (calf)
Okapi calves are born in dense rainforest cover and spend much of their early life lying hidden while the mother returns to nurse them. They feed on rich milk at first, then gradually begin nibbling soft leaves and shoots. Their striped legs and quiet hiding behavior help them disappear in patches of light and shadow. A notable anti-predator trait is that very young calves can delay defecation for weeks, reducing scent clues for predators.
