Western Honey Bee Pupa
Apis mellifera (pupa)

Western honey bee pupae develop inside capped wax cells, protected within the comb while their adult body parts form. This stage does not feed and moves very little, instead transforming from a soft larva into an insect with legs, antennae, wings, and hardened cuticle. The pupa relies on the nest’s warmth and the surrounding worker bees to complete development. A notable fact is that the eyes darken before emergence, giving beekeepers a visible clue about pupal age.
