Western Honey Bee Drone

Apis mellifera (drone)

Western Honey Bee Drone

Western honey bee drones live in colonies in natural cavities and human-made hives, leaving the nest on warm afternoons to seek queens in flight. They are fed by worker bees when young and later consume honey stored in the colony. Drones have large eyes and powerful flight muscles adapted for detecting and pursuing queens during mating flights, but they lack a sting. One notable fact is that a drone dies after successfully mating with a queen.
