Humboldt Penguin Juvenile
Spheniscus humboldti (juvenile)

A Humboldt penguin juvenile has left the nest and wears plainer gray plumage without the adult's bold black breast band. It begins foraging in cool coastal waters, chasing small schooling fish, anchovies, sardines, and squid. Juveniles are more vulnerable than adults as they learn to dive, evade predators, and return to shore safely. One notable fact is that their first months at sea are a critical survival period before they gain full adult efficiency underwater.
