Greater Flamingo Juvenile
Phoenicopterus roseus (juvenile)

A grey juvenile roams shallow lagoons, salt pans, and muddy wetland edges while learning the feeding routes of older birds. It feeds by filtering small crustaceans, insect larvae, and algae from the water with its developing curved bill. Juveniles are more mobile than chicks and begin building strength for longer flights, but they lack the vivid pink plumage of adults. Their feathers slowly gain color from carotenoid pigments in the diet.
