Oblong-winged Katydid
Amblycorypha oblongifolia
The adult oblong-winged katydid is a bright green, leaf-mimicking insect of eastern North American fields, thickets, gardens, and woodland edges. It feeds chiefly on leaves and flowers, using strong chewing mandibles while staying hidden in vegetation. Adults can make short flights, but their main defense is remaining motionless among leaves and springing away if approached. Males produce nighttime calling songs by rubbing their forewings together, a notable behavior used to attract mates.
