Lined Seahorse Juvenile
Hippocampus erectus (juvenile)

Lined seahorse juveniles settle into shallow seagrass beds, mangrove roots, and oyster reef edges where their colors help them hide. They anchor with a prehensile tail and wait for tiny crustaceans, larval shrimp, and other small planktonic prey to drift within range. Their bony rings and upright posture become more obvious as they grow, but they are still vulnerable to larger fish and crabs. A juvenile can change shade to better match grass blades, sponges, or algae.
