Sloth Bear Cub
Melursus ursinus (cub)
Sloth bear cubs stay close to their mother in dry forests, scrub, and grasslands of the Indian subcontinent, often riding on her back when very young. They nurse at first, then begin tasting fruit, grubs, and termites as they learn to dig and forage. Cubs are vulnerable to leopards, tigers, and other threats, so their main defenses are hiding, climbing, and staying with the adult female. A notable trait is their strong early grip, useful for clinging to the mother’s shaggy coat.
