Grey-headed Flying-fox

Pteropus poliocephalus

Grey-headed Flying-fox

A large fruit bat of eastern and southeastern Australia, the grey-headed flying-fox roosts by day in trees and flies out at night to feed. It eats nectar, pollen, blossoms, and soft fruit, often travelling long distances between flowering trees. Camps can be noisy and conspicuous, but each animal relies mainly on sight and smell rather than true echolocation. By carrying pollen and seeds across forests and urban edges, it plays an important role in regenerating native woodland.
