Common Quail Chick
Coturnix coturnix (chick)

Newly hatched common quail chicks are downy, precocial birds of open grassland, cereal fields, and weedy field edges. They leave the nest soon after hatching, moving through low cover while picking at tiny insects, seeds, and green shoots. Their striped brown-and-buff down provides strong camouflage, and their main defense is to freeze flat or dart under vegetation. Even at this stage, they feed themselves with quick, precise pecks.
