Japanese Quail
Coturnix japonica

Adult Japanese quail inhabit grasslands, weedy fields, and farmland across East Asia, spending most of the day concealed on the ground. They feed mainly on seeds and other plant material, with insects and small invertebrates adding protein during active seasons. When threatened, they usually freeze, run, or explode into a short low flight rather than stay airborne for long. Males are known for their distinctive crowing call, and the species lays small speckled eggs in a shallow ground nest.
