Columbian Ground Squirrel
Urocitellus columbianus

A stocky ground squirrel of mountain meadows, open slopes, and forest edges in the northwestern Rocky Mountains. It lives in burrow systems where it sleeps, shelters from predators, and spends much of the year hibernating. Its diet is mostly grasses, leaves, seeds, bulbs, and other plant material, with occasional insects. One notable feature is its sharp whistle-like alarm call, used to warn nearby squirrels of predators.
