Columbian Ground Squirrel Pup
Urocitellus columbianus (pup)

This young ground squirrel remains close to its natal burrow in mountain meadows, open slopes, and forest-edge habitats of the northwestern Rocky Mountains. It learns to forage on tender grasses, leaves, seeds, and occasional insects while relying on adults and the burrow for shelter. Pups emerge above ground only after developing enough to follow alarm calls and quickly retreat underground when danger approaches.
