Black-footed Ferret
Mustela nigripes

The adult black-footed ferret is a nocturnal hunter of North American grasslands, living mostly in prairie dog burrow systems. Its diet is dominated by prairie dogs, with occasional small mammals, birds, and insects taken when available. Solitary and agile, it travels through tunnels and emerges to make quick ambushes under cover of darkness. This species is one of North America's most endangered mammals and was brought back from a tiny surviving population through intensive conservation work.
