Gentoo Penguin Chick
Pygoscelis papua (chick)

A Gentoo Penguin chick stays in a pebble nest within a noisy breeding colony on sub-Antarctic islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. It is covered in soft down rather than waterproof feathers, so it remains on land while parents bring back regurgitated krill, fish, and squid. As it grows, it may join other chicks in loose crèches while still relying on individual calls to reunite with its parents. A notable vulnerability of this stage is that it cannot safely enter the sea until it fledges.
