Red Wood Ant Drone
Formica rufa (drone)
The red wood ant drone is a slender, winged male found around woodland mound nests during the breeding season. It feeds mainly on sugary liquids such as honeydew or nectar-like resources while it develops for its brief adult life. Drones leave the colony on warm days to seek mating flights with virgin queens, relying on rapid flight rather than nest defense. Unlike workers, a drone does not forage for the colony or maintain the mound, and it typically dies soon after mating.
