Red Wood Ant Pupa
Formica rufa (pupa)

The pupa rests in protected nest chambers, often enclosed in a pale silk cocoon that workers move through the mound to control temperature and humidity. It does not feed or hunt, instead using stored energy while its adult body forms inside. Its best defense is stillness, concealment, and the shelter of the nest material around it. This stage is the hidden transformation period when legs, antennae, mandibles, and the adult exoskeleton take shape.
