Red Imported Fire Ant Queen
Solenopsis invicta (queen)
The queen lives deep within a protected underground nest chamber, where workers groom, feed, and defend her. After mating, she sheds her wings and produces eggs continuously, relying on colony-provided liquids and processed food rather than foraging herself. A notable fact is that a mature queen can lay hundreds to thousands of eggs per day, allowing a fire ant colony to grow rapidly.
