Red Imported Fire Ant Male Alate
Solenopsis invicta (drone)
Male alates emerge from fire ant nests during warm, humid conditions and fly high in mating swarms to locate virgin queens. They are short-lived reproductive adults that feed little, if at all, and devote their brief adult lives to mating. A notable fact is that males die soon after mating, while successfully mated queens can found new colonies.
