House Cricket
Acheta domesticus

Adult house crickets are common around warm human structures, refuse areas, grass, and garden edges, especially where food scraps or shelter are available. They are nocturnal omnivores that nibble plant material, fungi, dead insects, and household crumbs while avoiding predators by jumping into cover. Males produce their familiar chirping song by rubbing their forewings together, using different calls for courtship and rivalry. Their chirp rate changes with temperature, making them a classic example of an insect whose sound can roughly indicate warmth.
