Common Blue Chrysalis

Polyommatus icarus (pupa)

Common Blue Chrysalis

This compact greenish chrysalis is formed near the ground in sheltered grassland vegetation, often among leaf litter or beneath a host plant. It does not feed or move about, instead undergoing metamorphosis within its protective pupal case. Ants may continue to guard the chrysalis, an unusual continuation of the caterpillar's mutualistic relationship.
