Eurasian Coot
Fulica atra

The adult Eurasian Coot is a blackish rail found on ponds, lakes, marshes, canals, and sheltered coastal waters across much of Europe, Asia, North Africa, and Australasia. It eats aquatic plants, algae, seeds, small invertebrates, and occasional scraps, diving or upending to reach food below the surface. Adults are famously territorial during breeding season, charging across the water and striking with their strong lobed feet. The white bill and frontal shield make the species instantly recognizable at close range.
