Common Moorhen
Gallinula chloropus

The adult Common Moorhen is a familiar wetland bird of ponds, lakes, marshes, ditches, and reed-fringed waterways. It swims with a jerky head motion, walks confidently on floating plants, and may fly short distances when pressed. Its broad diet includes aquatic vegetation, seeds, berries, insects, worms, snails, and other small animals. Adults are territorial in the breeding season and use loud calls, chasing, pecking, and wing displays during disputes.
