Trumpeter Swan
Cygnus buccinator

Trumpeter Swans inhabit large lakes, marshes, and slow-moving rivers across northern North America, spending much of their time on open water. Adults feed chiefly on submerged aquatic plants, supplementing this diet with small aquatic invertebrates. They are strongly territorial during nesting season and may defend themselves with hissing, wing slaps, and forceful strikes of their long necks. Their resonant, trumpet-like calls carry over long distances and give the species its common name.
