Elk Calf
Cervus canadensis (calf)

Elk calves are born in forests, meadows, and sheltered valleys, where they spend their first days hidden in dense vegetation while their mothers feed nearby. They nurse on rich milk before gradually adding grasses, sedges, leaves, and tender shrubs to their diet. A calf's spotted coat provides camouflage, and it can stand and run soon after birth to keep pace with the herd.
