Lesser Kestrel
Falco naumanni

A small falcon of open steppe, dry grassland, farmland, and village edges, often nesting colonially in holes in buildings or cliffs. It hunts mainly insects such as grasshoppers and crickets, but also takes small lizards and rodents when available. Adults fly with quick wingbeats, hover to scan the ground, and drop swiftly onto prey with their talons. This species is strongly migratory, breeding across southern Europe and western Asia and wintering largely in Africa.
