White-marked Tussock Moth Pupa
Orgyia leucostigma (pupa)

The pupa develops inside a loose silken cocoon attached to bark, leaves, fences, or other sheltered surfaces near the host plants where the caterpillar fed. It remains immobile and does not eat while transforming into an adult moth. The cocoon is often covered with the caterpillar's irritating hairs, which helps discourage predators. This protected stage is most common in wooded edges, parks, orchards, and urban plantings.
