Brown Anole Hatchling
Anolis sagrei (hatchling)

Newly hatched brown anoles live low in vegetation, leaf litter, and garden edges where cover is dense and insects are small. They hunt tiny ants, springtails, gnats, and other minute invertebrates with quick lunges. Hatchlings rely heavily on freezing, camouflage, and sudden dashes to avoid larger lizards, birds, and spiders. A notable survival trait is their ability to shed the tail if seized, distracting a predator while the young lizard escapes.
