Black-headed Gull Fledgling

Chroicocephalus ridibundus (fledgling)

Black-headed Gull Fledgling

A brown-and-white juvenile that has left the nest and spends time along lakes, rivers, wetlands, fields, and shorelines. It practices short flights, follows adults, and learns to pick insects, worms, crustaceans, and small fish from open ground or the water's edge. Its mottled plumage differs strongly from the adult's cleaner grey-and-white look, giving it extra concealment during its first months. A notable feature is the dark tail band and scaly upperparts, both typical of young birds before later moults.
