European Rhinoceros Beetle
Oryctes nasicornis

The adult is a stout scarab beetle found around old woodland, orchards, sawmills, compost, and decaying timber. Males use their curved head horn in contests, levering rivals rather than stabbing or biting. Adults are protected by a hard exoskeleton and can fly, often becoming active around dusk on warm nights. Despite its dramatic appearance, it is harmless to people and usually feeds little, sometimes taking sap or soft fruit juices.
