Regal Moth Pupa
Citheronia regalis (pupa)

The pupa rests in an earthen chamber beneath loose soil or leaf litter in deciduous woodland. It remains still while its larval tissues reorganize into an adult moth. It does not feed during this stage and relies on energy stored as a caterpillar. Its hard pupal casing and hidden underground position provide protection from many threats.
