Black Redstart Hatchling
Phoenicurus ochruros (hatchling)

A newly hatched black redstart is naked or sparsely downy and stays deep in a cup nest hidden in a wall crevice, ledge, or rocky cavity. It cannot fly and depends entirely on parents bringing tiny insects and other soft invertebrates. Its main behaviour is gaping and giving thin begging calls when vibrations or shadows signal an arriving adult. At this stage, rapid growth is the notable fact: feathers begin to emerge within days.
