Yellow-bellied Marmot
Marmota flaviventris

The adult yellow-bellied marmot lives in open western North American mountain habitats, especially rocky slopes, alpine meadows, and sagebrush edges with deep burrow systems. It is mostly herbivorous, feeding on grasses, flowers, seeds, and leaves to build fat for hibernation. Adults defend space with bites, chases, tooth displays, and loud alarm whistles from lookout rocks. One notable fact is that they hibernate for much of the year, surviving winter on stored body fat.
