Yellow-bellied Marmot Pup
Marmota flaviventris (pup)

A young yellow-bellied marmot pup stays close to the natal burrow in rocky meadows, talus slopes, and open mountain grasslands. It feeds on tender grasses, flowers, and soft leaves while learning to watch for eagles, foxes, and coyotes. Pups rely heavily on cover, diving underground when alarm calls sound. One notable fact is that pups born in spring must grow quickly during the short alpine summer before their first hibernation.
