Yellow-bellied Marmot Yearling
Marmota flaviventris (yearling)

A yearling yellow-bellied marmot ranges farther from the burrow system but still depends on tunnel entrances for safety. It grazes on grasses, forbs, seeds, and occasional insects while spending long periods sunning on rocks. Yearlings practice social sparring, tooth chattering, and quick retreats as they establish their place near the colony. A notable fact is that many yearlings disperse to find new habitat, making this stage especially active and exploratory.
