European Green Woodpecker
Picus viridis

The adult European Green Woodpecker lives in open woodland, orchards, hedgerows, parks, and grassland with nearby trees for nesting. It feeds heavily on ants, using a long sticky tongue to probe nests in soil, lawns, and rotting wood. Adults fly in a bounding, undulating path and cling to trunks with strong feet and a stiff tail. Its laughing yaffle call is a notable sound of the species, while drumming is used less often than in many other woodpeckers.
