European Green Woodpecker Hatchling
Picus viridis (hatchling)

A newly hatched European Green Woodpecker is blind, naked, and confined to a tree cavity nest in open woodland, orchards, or parkland. It cannot fly or forage, relying entirely on adults that bring ant larvae and other soft invertebrates. Its main behaviour is begging with repeated calls when it senses a parent at the nest hole. Even at this fragile stage, the bill begins developing into the tool later used for probing and chiselling.
