European Green Woodpecker Nestling
Picus viridis (nestling)

The nestling remains inside the excavated tree cavity, now feathering out and becoming more active as it jostles near the entrance for food. It is fed mainly ants, ant pupae, and other small invertebrates gathered by the adults from lawns, pastures, and woodland edges. It practices bill jabs and wing flutters but is still unable to make sustained flights. The enclosed nest hole gives useful protection from weather and many predators.
