Fire Salamander Larva
Salamandra salamandra (larva)

Fire salamander larvae live in cool, clean streams, springs, and shaded pools where they hide among stones and leaf litter. They breathe with feathery external gills and hunt tiny aquatic invertebrates by lunging and snapping with their jaws. Unlike the land-dwelling adult, this stage is strongly tied to water and depends on stable, oxygen-rich shallows. A notable feature is that the larvae are born live in water rather than hatching from eggs laid there.
