Fire Salamander
Salamandra salamandra

Adult fire salamanders inhabit damp deciduous and mixed forests, spending the day hidden in crevices, under logs, or beneath stones. They are slow-moving nocturnal hunters that eat earthworms, slugs, insects, and other small invertebrates. Their bold yellow markings advertise toxic skin secretions produced by glands along the back and behind the head. Some individuals can spray these toxins when threatened, making chemical defence their most important survival tool.
