Saltwater Crocodile Hatchling
Crocodylus porosus (hatchling)

Newly hatched saltwater crocodiles shelter in nests, muddy shallows, and thick waterside vegetation near freshwater or brackish wetlands. They feed on small insects, tadpoles, tiny fish, and other bite-sized prey while avoiding birds, large fish, and adult reptiles. Hatchlings give sharp calls that can draw attention from the mother, one of the few times this usually solitary reptile receives active protection. Their banded pattern helps them disappear among reeds, leaf litter, and broken light at the water’s edge.
