Great Spotted Woodpecker Hatchling
Dendrocopos major (hatchling)

A newly hatched Great Spotted Woodpecker is blind, mostly naked, and entirely dependent on warmth and food inside a tree cavity nest. It cannot fly or climb yet, but it begs loudly when adults arrive with insects and larvae. Its diet is delivered by the parents, mainly soft-bodied invertebrates gathered from bark and wood. Like other altricial woodpecker chicks, it begins life with very little down despite developing into a powerful climber later.
