Great Spotted Woodpecker Nestling
Dendrocopos major (nestling)

The nestling remains in a chiseled tree hole in woodland, parks, or orchards while its feathers and bill grow rapidly. It spends much of the day calling for food and jostling in the cavity, receiving insects, beetle larvae, and other small invertebrates from its parents. Although still flightless, it can brace and shift within the nest as it becomes stronger. Young birds at this stage show a red crown patch, a useful field mark that differs from most adults.
