Great Spotted Woodpecker Fledgling

Dendrocopos major (fledgling)

Great Spotted Woodpecker Fledgling

A fledgling Great Spotted Woodpecker has left the nest but still follows adults through trees in woodland edges, gardens, and mixed forest. It makes short, uneven flights and practices clinging to trunks while learning to probe bark for insects and larvae. It may also sample seeds and nuts as it becomes more independent. The red crown of juvenile plumage helps distinguish it from adult females and from adult males, which show red only on the nape.
