European Pond Turtle Hatchling
Emys orbicularis (hatchling)

A tiny hatchling keeps to warm, shallow pond margins, marsh edges, and dense aquatic vegetation where cover is close by. It feeds on very small invertebrates, insect larvae, tadpoles, and carrion fragments it can manage. Young hatchlings rely heavily on hiding and withdrawing into the shell because fish, birds, and mammals can easily prey on them. A notable fact is that hatchlings often emerge from nests some distance from water and must quickly find safe wet habitat.
