European Pond Turtle Juvenile
Emys orbicularis (juvenile)

Juveniles live in ponds, oxbows, canals, and slow rivers with muddy bottoms and plenty of basking sites. They hunt small aquatic animals such as worms, insect larvae, snails, tadpoles, and tiny fish while also scavenging when possible. Compared with adults, they spend more time concealed among plants and mud to avoid herons, large fish, and carnivorous mammals. Their dark, speckled shell helps break up their outline in weedy water.
