European Pond Turtle
Emys orbicularis

Adults inhabit still or slow-moving freshwater such as ponds, marshes, backwaters, and ditches, especially where sunny logs or banks allow basking. They are opportunistic feeders, taking aquatic invertebrates, amphibians, small fish, carrion, and some plant material. When threatened, an adult commonly dives, hides in mud or vegetation, or withdraws tightly into its shell rather than chasing danger on land. A notable fact is that this turtle can survive cold seasons by overwintering underwater in bottom mud.
