Red-tailed Hawk Hatchling
Buteo jamaicensis (hatchling)
A newly hatched red-tailed hawk is a down-covered chick confined to a high nest in woodland edges, open country, or human-made structures. It cannot fly or hunt, relying entirely on adults to tear and deliver small pieces of meat. Its main behaviors are begging calls, sleeping, and weak pecking or gaping when disturbed. One notable fact is that hawk chicks hatch with eyes partly open but need weeks of growth before their feathers can support flight.
