Red-tailed Hawk Nestling
Buteo jamaicensis (nestling)

A red-tailed hawk nestling remains in the nest while rapidly growing feathers, feet, and a hooked beak. It lives above open fields, grasslands, deserts, roadsides, or forest edges where the adults bring rodents, rabbits, snakes, and birds. At this stage it practices gripping, pecking, and wing-flapping but is still not capable of sustained flight. One notable fact is that the large feet and talons develop early, giving the young hawk a raptor-like grip before it can leave the nest.
